THE ELEPHANT SANCTUARY (www.elephants.com)

MEET THE RESIDENTS

The Elephant Sanctuary in Hohenwald, Tennessee was founded in 1995 and is the nations first natural habitat refuge developed specifically for endangered Female Asian Elephants. In nature, males and females do not live together. Herds are matriarchal. Young males remain with the herd until they are weaned and begin to exhibit mock breeding behavior. This usually happens between 6-10 years old. They are then forced to leave and join other young males. It operates on 800 acres, surrounded by a 3,000 acre buffer zone. It is a haven for sick, old and needy elephants.

THE ELEPHANT SANCTUARY IS GROWING. African Elephants will now also be calling the Elephant Sanctuary home. The Asian and African Elephants will each have their own habitat, as their needs are different. When completed, the sanctuary will be able to house 100 elephants of both species.

SISSY AT THE POND

Sissy was born in the wilds of Asia in 1962.
She was captured and separated from her
mother and family at only 2 years old.
She was a resident of Jack Bucks Zoo

She was swept away and presumed dead.
When the waters started to recede her
trunk was spotted wrapped around a tree
limb. In 1996 she was sent to another
zoo to breed. When she was not
